I’m interested in art therapy - do I need to be able to draw/paint? I'm not creative at all...

It is not at all necessary to be able to draw/paint - a stick figure can be very rich in meaning! At Safe Space no artistic talent is needed, art is simply used as a healing tool and images can often look child-like - which is perfect.

What can I expect from an art therapy-counselling or counselling session?
A typical session is 60 minutes and will begin with counselling around your current state of being and what issue you would like to focus on for the session. A process will be used to explore and gain meaning and connection to you about your issue. We will unpack, heal and integrate what arises from this – usually a deeper experience, insight and meaning arises to be acknowledged and integrated.

Some Aha! moments come during the session, others can come in the days/weeks to follow and can and will unfold overtime as unconscious material is integrated and digested and becomes part of your life.

What is the difference between transpersonal art therapy & counselling and other approaches to counselling/ psychology/ psychiatry?

Client centred vs. directive - At Safe Space we trust the client has all the answers within and our role is to facilitate this process of unfolding.

Exploration vs. analytical - We are not here to analyse you or the images that you draw. Our role is to help you explore and connect with significant symbols, images and bodily sensations and what they mean for you.

Holisitic vs. diagnostic - You will be seen for your whole integrated self and not as a label.

Self-realisation vs. being given advice - We will hold space for you to have your own realisations which is very powerful.
